WELL done to Rónán Mullen for his well researched and commonsense column on chastity and abstinence (Irish Examiner, June 18).

Abstinence and the illusion of safe sex

Recently I received my regular reminder from the Irish Blood Transfusion Service to donate blood. I notice that the 13 criteria concerning transmissible infections under which a donor must not give blood “apply even if a condom or other protective was used.”

It seems that ‘safe sex’ isn’t really all that safe.
