March cancellation an act of cowardice

THE Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) will not be staging their annual May Day march in the capital this year.

March cancellation an act of cowardice

The excuse given, as many had suspected, was that the city will be closed off for Bertie Ahern and co's so-called Day of Welcomes on May 1.

DCTU members, meanwhile, will troop off to the May Day march in Belfast. This issue has been disgracefully handled by the DCTU.

Many delegates called for the Dublin march to be held either on the Friday before or on the Saturday after May Day or even to make it a proper community event and have it in, say, Coolock or Tallaght.

Despite this shameful act of cowardice on the part of the DCTU, a May Day march in Dublin will be organised by the group 'Another Europe is Possible,' starting at noon in Dame Street and heading to the Phoenix Park.

This will have a large trade union involvement, as well as other events organised by anarchist and libertarian groups, including Reclaim the Streets.
