EU can’t usurp the authority of the UN

JIM MULLINS (Irish Examiner, May 25) thinks the EU ought to usurp UN authority in sanctioning Israel.

EU can’t usurp the authority of the UN

Five years ago, NATO did just that when the adversarial alliance unilaterally hence unlawfully attacked Yugoslavia. Hence a dangerous precedent for the illegal invasion of Iraq.

The UN remains the sole source of universal authority as it alone represents all countries inclusively. Other organisations merely serve the exclusive interests of their own member states.

The UN charter is, de facto, the world's constitution. It promises to prevent the "scourge of war." Hence a warless world.
