TOM KINDLON (Irish Examiner letters, November 19) states: “In England, English is split into two subjects, English Literature and English Language, at GCSE level with universities only requiring students to pass the English language exam.”

Literature ‘fascists’ set the agenda

I wish this were true. In the UK there is indeed a subject called ‘GCSE English Literature.’

This subject is optional and a person could be admitted to university and to many jobs without having passed that exam.
