We bring tears to immigrant eyes
Time after time, I come across young people from eastern Europe who have arrived in Ireland looking for excitement and hoping for a new beginning, a new life.
Time after time, doors are slammed in their faces, wiping out their hopes on arrival in this so-called Christian country.
Empty promises made by self-interested employers have dampened the spirits of these young and optimistic boys and girls who arrive here buoyed by their visions of an Ireland of ‘One Hundred Thousand Welcomes.’
This is the image we have spent millions advertising globally. If only people could see the hurt they inflict; if only they could see the tears they cause to be shed as these new arrivals huddle together, comforting each other. These young people are generous, proud and courageous. We do not deserve them.
