Partnerships Bill a step towards full equality

LABOUR LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) welcomes the Domestic Partnerships Bill, to be introduced shortly in the Seanad by Senator David Norris.

Partnerships Bill a step towards full equality

We understand that there is a diversity of opinion within the LGBT community about how far this bill will go.

However, our position is that this is a very welcome step along the road to full equality for which we will continue to campaign strongly.

The recent National Economic and Social Forum report on equality policies for gays and lesbians provides a roadmap for progress in many areas.

Recent developments in New Zealand, where civil unions supported by the NZ Labour party will become law in April, and legislation to be proposed by the Socialist Party in Spain, give us heart internationally.

The recently passed Civil Partnerships Bill in Britain should have implications for the LGBT community in an all-Ireland context.

If any of your readers would like Labour LGBT to consider other issues of concern to the LGBT community in Ireland, they can contact us by email at lgbt@labour.ie

The Labour Party will hold its second lesbian and gay equality forum later this year.
