DURING my four years as a university student in Cork I never missed a weekly visit to the Capitol cineplex in Grand Parade.

It had a special atmosphere that is sadly lacking in many of today's 'industrial' multiplexes and it came as quite a shock when I heard of its closure.

While the cinema always featured the latest blockbusters, it also provided the film enthusiast with a chance to see some great documentaries and independent films - a rare occurrence with today's cinemas.

And worse, it's now going to be demolished and replaced with retail and apartment blocks which, like some deadly virus, have been sprouting up exponentially in recent years.
