Mayoral pacts are the height of hypocrisy
We have Cllr Maria Byrne pouring her heart out to the media that she was democratically elected as the Fine Gael nominee when all the while we must endure the abomination of the ‘cosy pact’ selection of mayors on all city councils.
As Corkonian I have nothing but contempt for the position of lord mayor as it currently stands.
Not only is the election confined to the council chambers with no input from the electorate, but it is further confined to three parties - The Publican Party, the Wishy- Washy Blueshirt Party and the Liberal Agenda At All Costs Party.
Ironically I would have to congratulate Mr Scully for throwing the cat among the pigeons in regard to this cosy political pact.
Who knows, if we get more of these Limerick-style ‘coups,’ the pacts may fall apart and we may end up with the citizens of our cities actually choosing who their first citizens should be.
