Safety first and second

The Traffic Watch Scheme was a great success when initiated in the Kilkenny region. It was praised by AA’s Conor Faughnan as being one of the best things that had been done for driving in Ireland.

AA recommended that the scheme be extended nationwide. The gardaí were delighted with its success. Then all went quiet.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan then introduced the points scheme. There was an immediate drop in speed and, as a result, a great drop in accidents. May I suggest that Minister Brennan marry the two schemes. I think they could be wonderful together.
