IS it absolutely necessary for us to affix the adjective ‘ailing’ to the Pope each time he is mentioned?

Most of us will be old eventually and if we make it to the age of 84 with the Pope's sharpness and vigour, we will have done very well. Well, that is, until we are permanently labelled 'my ailing grandad'/'my ailing granny', etc.
