FF gets a chance to lean a little to the left

YOUR political correspondent Fionnán Sheahan reported (Irish Examiner, September 1) that Fianna Fáil would be “focusing on left-wing issues” at its recent gathering at Inchydoney, near Clonakilty, Co Cork.

FF gets a chance to lean a little to the left

This gathering had a golden opportunity to put their new-found left-wing philosophy into practice?

The centre for the unemployed in Cork city an hour's drive from Inchydoney is facing imminent closure owing to a withdrawal of funding by the Government.

This purpose-built centre provides a wide range of educational courses and advice to the local community.

It is a place to meet for those without work, retired people and asylum seekers.

I was involved with the centre for several years as a literacy tutor.

We provided individual tuition for people whose literacy problems were a barrier to employment.

Now this service is under threat through lack of funding at a time when the exchequer is awash with money.

I call on all the Cork representatives of Fianna Fáil to act to prevent the closure of this vital community centre. Otherwise the party's new caring philosophy will be seen as so much cant.
