Don’t alienate us by changing our cathedral
We are only the caretakers of this beautiful building which has withstood the ravages of time. We must keep it in good repair, inside and out, and this has been done over a 10-year period. It was built with donations from home and abroad, sometimes from those who are not of our persuasion and who could ill afford it.
People come from near and far to admire its beauty and workmanship. This was the last sight of Ireland for our emigrants. It was at these altar rails that we received our first Communion, like our fathers and mothers. They are in our thoughts when we go there now with our children and grandchildren.
To alter any part of this beautiful structure would be sacrilegious.
Will we next remove the spire and replace it with a dome? You don’t hear of people wanting to put glasses on the Mona Lisa or new arms on the Venus de Milo.
Please, let commonsense prevail. Don’t destroy our inheritance. Encourage young and old to come and pray. Don’t alienate us.
