Spelling it out

NOW that Cork is the European Capital of Culture, is it too much to expect that the organising committee would spell our street names correctly?

According to their advertisement (Irish Examiner, January 4) we now have a Princess Street instead of Princes Street; a Harley Street, instead of Harley’s Street; and, most appallingly, a Terence MacSweeney Quay instead of Terence MacSwiney Quay.

While the two former street names honour illustrious personages from Britain (and I have no hang-ups about this), the latter was a Corkman who died for his country.

And, oh!, Fr Mathew used only one ‘t’ in his name, and (Eamon) de Valera spelled his surname with two words.
