Totalitarians abuse democratic processes

I READ with interest Ryle Dwyer’s article on his interpretation of democracy (Irish Examiner, May 3).

A political party whose aim is the destruction of the democratic institutions of a state is not a democratic party. If such a party uses the democratic process to further this aim this is not democracy in action, but totalitarianism.

The European Union is allowed within its treaties to sanction, including suspension of EU membership rights, a member state which violates the principles of democracy even if people in an election or referendum endorsed such violation.
