A JUDGE recently fined the owners of a Dublin crèche who were deemed to have failed to ensure the safety of a child in their care. Why were the parents obliged to go to the courts to get redress?

Surely the State has a responsibility to put in place an effective system that regulates childcare standards and takes action as a matter of course?

An effective courts system should serve as an occasional mechanism for legislative clarification, not for cloaking bad political administration.
