RECENTLY I underwent an operation on a trapped nerve in my right wrist. As I am a chef I was unable to work for four weeks.

PRSI was worthless when I really needed it

After obtaining four medical certificates for being out of work I sent away all the documentation necessary to obtain disability benefit for my loss of a month's wages.

Expecting to receive a cheque back from the social services, instead I received a letter saying I was not eligible for benefit. After consulting a friend who works for social welfare, it transpired that because I was self-employed and paying PRSI contributions under Plan S two years ago, I was not eligible for any benefit now.
