Britain’s private bus services set a high standard
I can write with a fair degree of knowledge on the bus business in Britain, particularly in London where I was non-executive director of a bus and coach company that is still operating in that market.
Non-franchising deregulation is what happened there. Far from being a failure, the passenger numbers in London alone have increased by more than 50% in the past six to eight years.
The quality of service is second to none; the equipment used by the contractors is of the highest standard and the reliability of the services would put our best efforts in Ireland to shame.
Most of the buses in use in Ireland on a daily basis would not be allowed to operate in Britain because of the appalling standard of maintenance and cleanliness in Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus.
In London, even the smallest dent, or any other visible damage, means the vehicle has to be removed from service immediately. Even if the damage occurs while the bus is on service, it must cease operating on the route and be replaced at once.
The bus routes are put out to competitive tender and these are awarded on a five-year basis to the successful operator.
If the routes are run to the extremely high standards required by Transport for London (TFL), then the operator can make a good return on his investment.
However, if he fails to deliver the penalties are draconian and take effect for deviating as little as 5% from the terms of the contract.
This approach rewards good management and skilled staff at all levels. It makes sure that those who do not deliver to the required standard are suitably penalised.
Mr Kinsella’s comments bear no resemblance to the facts.
