UN resolution does nothing for Darfur

EOIN RYAN, MEP, has accurately outlined the current situation in Darfur in his recent letter (‘Sudan must guarantee aid workers’ safety, Irish Examiner, September 17).

While Mr Ryan notes the failure of the Sudanese government to protect their own people, he fails to mention the failure of the international community in this regard.

The resolution put forward by the UN security council has done nothing for the 1.5 million people who have been displaced by this conflict. They are still afraid to go home because the Janjaweed are still out there and, in some cases, have been incorporated into the police force.

Until the international community commits to sending in a protection force, these people will not return to their villages and the crisis will indeed worsen. Then we, too, will have failed the people of Darfur.
