Off the rails

THE short-sightedness of our public representatives always amazes me. They know there’s a scarcity of private land – let alone public land. But when a semi-state company like Aer Rianta decide to sell the Torc Great Southern in Killarney, they are all too willing to express consternation, when it’s almost too late.

To sell a property of this magnitude to the private sector is scandalous. The site could be let to Bord na gCon for a greyhound stadium, which would attract tourist and native alike in Killarney. Rail travel is the way of the future.

Killarney station is a bottleneck, so why not shift it to the Torc Great Southern site? Trains to Tralee would not have to pull out or pull back to enter the 'new station,' and when freight comes back in vogue as it will then CIE will have a ready-made freight yard.
