Glamour can’t hide the menace of alcohol

THE tragic and high-profile death of George Best came at a time when the negative side-effects of alcohol rank hugely in our society. The drug alcohol is subtly breaking down individuals at an alarming rate.

Our selectivity in examining problem drinking is also tragic. Glamour ought never to mask the raw, heart-rending, dire circumstances that this drug can generate.

Many appear to have a collective denial as to its seriousness and are only too willing to protect further usage through faulty justification. Annually at this time, we hear the same old rhetoric trotted out as to how we should be more ‘responsible’ and ‘sensible.’ It’s tiring, wasteful and largely ineffective.
