Beware of drugs that turn people into zombies

YOUR correspondent Seán Fleming (Irish Examiner letters, January 3) says that “so-called anti-psychotic drugs are supposedly meant to treat schizophrenia and manic depressive illness”.

Beware of drugs that turn people into zombies

I agree that they don’t. All they succeed in doing is suppressing the symptoms and turning people into zombies. Is this a good way to help those who are suffering and distressed?

Which is worse - hearing voices or not being able to concentrate, or being so restless that you can neither sit down or stand up for more than a few seconds? Many people all over the world complain of this agonising feeling - now referred to as akatesia - when taking anti-psychotic drugs. It can be so bad that some even try to commit suicide.
