We need a debate, not Church-bashing

MIKE MACKINNON takes a swipe at what he disparagingly calls the God squad (Irish Examiner letters, Oct 28).

He uses the current EU constitution debate to take part in the popular Irish pastime of Church-bashing.

He wrote of selective Christians and Catholics but conveniently forgets to mention whether he is an à la carte Catholic who has at times of births, marriages, deaths etc availed of, or attended, such sacraments.

He wrote of what he called the psychological crutch of religion.

Recent studies in America have proven that a solid faith and belief in a god of some form does have a beneficial effect on people's mental health no bad thing, of course, as those who believe know this already.

So Mike, take a little time out to learn what effect the EU constitution, in its proposed form, will have on the right to life of the unborn etc.

Then you might be able to take part in a proper debate without resorting to church-bashing tactics.
