Prison staff and families also in the firing line
Natives of Limerick who have achieved prominence in various fields have been vocal in defending their birthplace.
Very laudable on their part, but let it not be forgotten that last year in Limerick, members of the Irish Prison Service, so often vilified by the media, found their homes and families under attack from criminal gangs just because of their jobs.
How many employees (and their families) in other sectors have had to suffer this?
Can you imagine the human cost involved in being a prison officer?
