Oscar-winning performance on cathedral bells

THE Oscars brought back an old memory last night. A liner set out for New York bound for France, calling to Cobh en route (No, not that liner!).

This one had Laurel and Hardy on board. As it heaved to at Cobh, the bells of St Colman’s Cathedral rang out the familiar notes of the Cuckoo Waltz, the Laurel and Hardy signature tune.

A Corkonian welcome from the bottom of the heart.
