‘Cork lifeboat’ beat the Titanic
McCarthy, from Grattan Hill Road, was saved in lifeboat number four along with a fellow Corkonian, a crewman named Jack Foley.
Boat 4 also pulled another Cork crew member, William Lyons, from the water, but he later died of exposure.
So while there were up to 60 Irish crew aboard the Titanic, the Corkmen seemed to have had their own lifeboat!
I am keenly interested, however, in learning more about William McCarthy, and would love to hear from relatives, with whom I would hope to pool information.
