For a country that boasts of its generosity to others in their time of need, and prides itself on its religious virtues, we are letting ourselves down unforgivably.

We willingly remember Irish suffering, but our disgust at poverty that comes too close to us raises questions about our national insecurity. It really is a case of dog kicks cat.
