Smoking ban could also apply to your home

MUCH of the recent comments are on smoking in pubs. However, the effect of the ban is far more intrusive.

If you operate a business from home, it is a workplace and after January 1, you will, therefore, be are banned from smoking in your own home.

If you ask a plumber, electrician, cleaner doctor or nurse to visit, it is a workplace and to escape a potential fine and/or imprisonment, you will have to remove any ashtrays and put up a sign, stating that no smoking is allowed during the duration of their visit.

Visitors to Ireland will find in future that they can not smoke anywhere, even in the privacy of their hotel bedroom.

Does that matter? I think it does.

For example, a group of six arrive in Ireland, of which two smoke. I feel sure that it will be their last visit as next time the group wants to go anywhere, the two that do smoke will find a reason not to pick Ireland.

The regulations are promulgated on the basis that environmental tobacco smoke causes a serious health risk, yet the often-quoted WHO report’s original findings found no significant increase in health risks.
