Creative pursuit

I REFER to the article titled ‘Skateboarders facing ban from the streets of Cork city’ (Irish Examiner, August 19).

Creative pursuit

While the report was fair, I fear that some readers might think that skateboarding is about destruction.

It is not. On the contrary, skateboarding is creative.

When a boy goes to skate at Emmet Place by the Opera House, for example, there is only flat ground. So he goes off and finds cones or parking barriers or whatever, and builds some kind of an obstacle. The kid is trying to be creative. It's not about destroying the obstacle; it's about the skating challenge how can he build something out of nothing and express his creativity?

Surely this is exactly the type of attitude we should be encouraging in our youth.
