Pool promises must be honoured

AS THE parent of a young member of Sundays Well Swimming Club in Cork, I wish to express my concern over the uncertain future of Douglas pool.

Pool promises must be honoured

Yet again it appears that no final decision has been made regarding any proposal for the pool.

However, the Sundays Well club has made a written submission giving a viable alternative to keep the pool open as a public utility. To date, it has not received an answer.

I trust the powers-that-be have not been waiting ‘til after the local elections to announce the closure of the pool against the will of the people.

Unlike our local politicians, the swimming coaches give of their time for free. They do not make empty promises, like some politicians.

Instead, theirs is a thankless task which they undertake for the love of the sport.

The value of this facility and these clubs to our local community is priceless and let’s hope that this will be appreciated by our local representatives.

In an age of ever-increasing cynicism and apathy among the electorate, let’s hope for once that they stick to their election promises and keep Douglas as a municipal pool for the benefit of all the local community.
