Builders get the message on naming estates

DR PAT WALLACE, director of the National Museum of Ireland, is to be commended for the very positive and sincere oration he gave at the annual Béal na Bláth commemoration in honour of Michael Collins.

He rightly deplored the anglicisation of Ireland and in that he was at one with Michael Collins, who stated quite bluntly after the signing of the Treaty that “the first and most important task is the restoration of the Irish language and until that is done, we are not free”.

Dr Wallace drew special attention to the use of new estate names that are pompous and anglicised.

Fortunately, your readers will be aware that the tide is already turning. Thanks to the work of Gael-Taca over the past few years, there are now over seventy developers in counties Cork, Kerry and Waterford using beautiful Irish language names such as Árd na Mara, Páirc na Gréine, Gleann Álainn, Cois Cuain, Bruach na hAbhainn, Dún Eoin etc.

There is no excuse for developers to pick inappropriate names.
