Why should my old car be taxed more than a big, new 4x4?

I HAVE a 1997 Peugeot 305 car (value €1,500) and am struggling to put together the €539 annual motor tax.

The other day I saw a huge, brand new Lexus 4x4 jeep (value approx €70,000).

I couldn’t help thinking to myself: “Wow! The annual motor tax on that must be colossal...”

Imagine my surprise when I peered through the windscreen at the tax disc and saw that it is, in fact, only €240.

The wear-and-tear on road surfaces caused by this vehicle is far greater than that caused by my Peugeot 305.

Could somebody in the motor tax section of the Department of the Environment please explain where is the logic and fair play in this situation?

I am pretty annoyed at being taken for the proverbial ride.
