Why postal staff work overtime for free

OUR members in the CWU were very amused at the announcement that post persons get paid for overtime they have worked.

Why postal staff work overtime for free

Our experience of An Post is that you work overtime and the company refuses to pay for it. This occurs in sub post offices where there is no inspector or overseer to sanction overtime in heavy mail situations.

Therefore the post persons work the overtime without payment.

Why do they work for nothing?

The reason is loyalty to their customers whom they would not leave without a mail service in rural Ireland.

Now An Post refuses to pay our members their cost of living increase under ‘Sustaining Progress,’ in addition to not paying them for the overtime they have worked.

These post persons live on a maximum gross basic wage of €463 per week.
