Our chance to give Bush some balance

I AM concerned over President Bush’s endorsement of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s plans and methods. US support for Israel over its neighbours is not new, but the lack of subtlety in the president’s message to the Arab word is shocking.

The Palestinian proponents of the non-violent path to a settlement are losing support on the ground.

President Bush is coming to Ireland. While there is widespread opposition to the visit, he should be received with the respect his office deserves.

Care should be taken, however, to avoid any public hugging or backslapping. This visit will be viewed by the world and used to gauge the level Irish and European support, opposition or apathy towards US policy and methods. It can also be an opportunity to broker peace. It would be constructive if a delegation representing the Palestinian Authority were invited to Dublin prior to the Bush visit.

This would allow the opportunity to pass on their views to the president. It is a brief that he needs to hear as I sincerely hope and wish to believe that he doesn’t fully understand what’s going on out there.

It would also show the rest of the world that we are willing to listen to all parties involved. We have a serious responsibility and a rare opportunity here. How we handle it can have significant consequences for peace and security.
