Money for resignations

IF THE government offered members of the Oireachtas monetary encouragement to resign their Dáil or Seanad seats before their mandate expired, it would provoke outrage.

How is it acceptable to offer them money as an enticement to resign their council seats?

Article 28A.5 of the constitution refers to the filling of casual vacancies on local authorities.

It’s unlikely that when the amendment on local government was passed, “casual” meant mass resignation on foot of financial inducement.
