The new unionism

IN recent times there have been demands for our national flag to be changed, the words of our national anthem to be rewritten and for consideration to be given to rejoining the British Commonwealth.

In addition to these demands, British awards and titles of nobility are being conferred on Irish citizens, the Orange Order are expected to march in Dublin next January and all indications are that Britain’s Queen Elizabeth will receive an official State invitation to visit the Republic soon.

One wonders just how long St Stephen’s Day will survive before calls are made to change it to Boxing Day.
