How to tell a liberal from a conservative

FOLLOWING President Bush through Florida, Terry Prone (Irish Examiner, April 26) says: “When a liberal disagrees with you, they think more explanation will make you see the light.

How to tell a liberal from a conservative

When a conservative disagrees with you, they think you’re impractical, immoral, thick as a plank, probably disloyal and deserving of a smack upside the head. They have no desire to convince you. They just want to discontinue you.”

This statement has the facts backwards. US liberals actually behave in the manner Terry Prone assigns to US conservatives, and vice versa. Most American conservatives are better informed and think for themselves. I grew up as a liberal democrat in Massachusetts. During my teens, I began to research issues and draw my own conclusions. My family (who are still liberals) disowned me as a result.
