Islamic injunction

YOUR correspondent Colm Gillis (Irish Examiner letters, September 8) quotes sura 60, verse 8 of the Koran as evidence that God does not forbid Muslims to deal kindly with non-Muslims.

The next verse, in sura 60, is perhaps more revealing:

“Allah only forbids you respecting those who made war upon you on account of your religion, and drove you forth from your homes and backed up others in your expulsion, (and forbids) that you make friends with them and whoever makes friends with them; these are the unjust.”
