Let’s commemorate this Irish warrior

I AM writing to you in connection with the grave of Sgt Maj Coughlan, VC, 75th Regiment, Gordon Highlanders and Connaught Rangers, in Westport, Co Mayo.

Let’s commemorate this Irish warrior

He won his VC for rescuing a comrade under fire and for leadership in a separate firefight in India in 1857 during the Indian Mutiny. Out of the 1,354 VCs awarded to date, 190 were awarded to Irishmen.

It is not my intention to debate the rights or wrongs of the British in India. I wish rather to highlight the bravery of this Irish soldier, from Eyerscourt, Co Galway, and to make the dedication of his grave a journey of reconciliation.
