IN her report comparing public service incomes (Irish Examiner, Nov 23), Catherine Shanahan presents the supervision and substitution arrangement in schools as a “pay increase” for teachers.

More pay - but for more work

It is not. Rather is it a separate payment for extra work, requiring the signing of a separate contract for those teachers who wish to accept it.

It involves, among other negatives, accepting the discrimination against women on maternity leave that’s inherent in the deal. Therefore, teachers have not, as your correspondent implies, received a pay increase.
