THE controversy on the suitability of Rocco Buttiglione for the position of EU Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security seems to show that in the Europe of 2004 to hold orthodox Christian beliefs on sexual morality may debar one from office.

It was good to hear Brian Crowley MEP on 5-7 Live on Tuesday being full square behind Mr Barroso's team. We need more people like Brian in public life, whose statements reflect their private beliefs.

These people are normally called honest. Those who divorce what they do from what they think are normally called hypocrites.
