LIKE the gathering in Gleneagles, the world summit in New York last week elected neatly to sidestep the substantive issues which need to be tackled, if the lot of the poor in the developing world is to be significantly improved.

The reason why millions of the people in the Third World die needlessly and millions more suffer horrendously is due to the prodigious indifference of the international community to their plight.

In essence the rich governments of the west do not care sufficiently about the downtrodden while the vast number of desperately poor nations are governed by despots and dictators who care even less for their own people.
