Our behaviour is not at the mercy of our genes

I WISH to draw attention to an event taking place in Dublin between from October 9-14: the 12th World Congress on Psychiatric Genetics.

Our behaviour is not at the mercy of our genes

The inherent danger, I believe, is that this congress might perpetuate the myth that genes play a significant role in behaviour, especially in relation to so-called mental illness. No substantial scientific evidence has ever been found to prove this.

Even if genes did play a part in predisposing people to certain behaviours, the influence of societal/ environmental factors and the exercise of one’s own volition are certainly much more significant.
