Weasel words can’t hide truth
Their words do not disguise the fact there is a crisis in the public finances. Our State now teeters on the same financial foundations as Elan, Enron and WorldCom. It is important that we do not return to boom and bust. However, in executing cutbacks, our Government should be mindful of three things.
Firstly, that they display practical compassion for the weakest in our society by preserving certain departments from the axe.
Secondly, why won’t the Government pursue high-flying tax cheats or change its low tax incentive schemes for the élite of the racing industry to help balance the books?
Thirdly, they must realise that honesty is the best policy. With the benefit of hindsight, there is a genuine feeling amongst Irish people of having been hard done by in the recent General Election. We were told we didn’t have to worry, there would be no tax hikes and no cutbacks.
People don’t like to be lied too. Perhaps a truth which brings a tear, and therefore a new resolution for change, is infinitely better than a lie which brings a smile but only for a short time.
