A Dáil seat that’s not Fianna Fáil’s to lose

IN his forecast of events for 2005, Fergus Finlay (Irish Examiner, December 28) makes one startling revelation.

A Dáil seat that’s not Fianna Fáil’s to lose

I know he was writing with his tongue in close proximity to his cheek, but one of his observations calls for further scrutiny.

Gazing into his crystal ball, Fergus informs us that in September ‘05 Fianna Fáil will “lose both seats” - one in a by-election in Meath and the other in Kildare.

Living as I do away from Ireland I may not be up to date with events at home.

However, I understood that the seat vacated in Meath belonged to John Bruton. I also understood that the same Mr Bruton was a member of the main opposition party, Fine Gael.

I must say the Italian media here are most remiss in not having informed us of the significant fact that he had crossed the floor to the Government benches.
