A slur on the creators of loving families

I TAKE grave exception to Ann McElhinney’s article in which she sought to portray all inter-country adoptions as wrong and immoral, and the children of such adoptions as victims (Irish Examiner, April 15).

A slur on the creators of loving families

Irish people who have adopted children from abroad were demonised and their motives questioned. This is a slur on the many thousands who have successfully adopted children and have created loving family units in Ireland.

Ms McElhinney’s piece was hurtful to all those involved. In researching her documentary, Return to Sender, her views on inter-country adoption were clearly tainted by her experiences. But she should not allow this to colour her view of all inter-country adoptions.

Neither should The Irish Examiner.

A more balanced, less jaundiced handling of this issue is needed.
