Funding breakdown tells a shameful story

THE funding for the maintenance and development of cancer services has been laid bare (Irish Examiner, November 22).

Funding breakdown tells a shameful story

Your reporter Catherine Shanahan has identified the amount provided to each health board. These allocations are shameful for the development of a service that each and every family will require.

The €9 million in the health estimates allocated to cancer services does not include any funding for chemotherapy services running at over-capacity, or palliative care services where regional cancer units have no designated beds.

The funding delivered in the budget for maintenance and development of cancer services will be critical to every family in the country. The situation in Cork is the tip of the iceberg.
