Would you believe?

IN response to Noel Whelan’s column in which he said that we’d better believe Bertie Ahern when he ruled out a coalition with Sinn Féin (Irish Examiner, November 17):

I recall Fianna Fáil saying in their manifesto before a recent general election that, if returned, they would hold a referendum on Ireland joining the NATO-sponsored Partnership for Peace (PfP).

FF were elected, but no referendum was held.

We joined the PfP as a result of a Dáil vote.

FF posters about health cuts affecting the old, the sick and the elderly was another story that changed after an election.

To paraphrase Groucho Marx, who do we believe? Noel Whelan or the evidence before our eyes?
