Taoiseach was right to stand his ground

THE Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is to be applauded for standing his ground and refusing to call a day of mourning for John Paul II.

Few, if any, of those demanding a day off alluded to the fact that Irish employers, regardless of size or financial standing, would have had to pay up as normal for a day when no work was done.

To accept money in such circumstances would have been highly unethical, amounting to theft on a national scale.
