Bring home our troops to sort out the thugs

UP to 1,000 Irish troops assist the UN, ostensibly in peacekeeping functions, abroad.

Bring home our troops to sort out the thugs

I believe that those troops are badly needed at home to supplement our valiant but undermanned Garda force which is not physically capable of quelling our endemic street violence, robberies and general vandalism.

Law-abiding citizens, young and old, are scared to walk the streets after dark. Widows and widowers live in dread of break-ins by criminals intending to rob them of their meagre pension money, possibly rape them, or even murder them.

The troops could be re-deployed to work with the gardaí patrolling the streets, especially at pub and nightclub closing time.

These riot troops should be empowered to use whatever physical force may be necessary to subdue thugs and incarcerate them until they can be arraigned before the courts.

Such ruffians could be held in disused army barrack cells on a bread and water diet.

Military police would soon impress on them the futility of refusing to conform with law and order requirements.

I know I will be castigated by libertarians concerned solely with the spurious rights such miscreants may have.

But they never gave a damn about the rights of the law-abiding, or of the unfortunate victims.
