Top of the polls with God on their side

THE fundamentalist organisers of the ‘Free the DUP from Secularism’ campaign need have no fear that the party’s main movers are out of touch with the Lord.

I first experienced the remarkably intimate quality of a Free Presbyterian’s connection with Jehovah when idle curiosity took me to one of their services in 1969. I was fascinated to hear their moderator in his prayers discussing options with the Lord on the disposal of the soul of a recently dead editor who was a dangerous anti-sectarian radical.

That service of nearly 40 years ago came to mind when I heard Rev Willie McCrea’s opening prayer at the DUP conference in which he congratulated the Lord on dealing with another unlikely radical, the dangerous David Trimble.
